Are you a fan of mystery novels? Reading page by page, glued to your couch, unaware of the time – if you can relate to all these scenarios – welcome to my favorite book genre! If you’re just starting out, and want to learn more about mystery novels, let me help explain why it should be your new favorite genre.
Mystery novels are a breath of fresh air after a long tiring week. They are a ray of light at the end of the tunnel when you no more want to interact with other people but still be a part of someone’s life, albeit virtually.
Reading a mystery novel is fun and exciting, just like working on a puzzle. You want to find the culprit and solve the mystery, it’s you trying to figure out what the characters are experiencing and staying a step ahead. You’re entering the world of the protagonist, thinking like they think, anticipating their next move. It’s thrilling to place yourself in someone else’s shoes and become a different person, if only for a little while.
So, What Is a Mystery Novel?
The mystery genre is a fiction genre that follows a crime from the moment it is committed to the moment it is solved through a chain of events. These novels can also be called whodunnits, rightly because they turn the reader into a detective who tries to decipher what, when, and how of a crime.
Speaking of which, I read one such spellbinding novel a few days back, Fine by AmyLea. And guess what, I finished this 370-page novel in just 1.5 days! That’s the fastest I have ever read, all thanks to the finger-biting mystery plot that revolves around a missing person. Okay, no spoilers here, but if you’re looking for a great mystery novel to start out, start with Fine, by AmyLea Murphy.
Here is what makes a mystery novel fun to read:
What Makes a Great Mystery Story
- A strong hook
Readers are invited to solve a crime or mystery by piquing their interest. The author provides enough information to create a scenario you’ll be drawn into and excited to learn more about.
- Atmosphere
Mystery novels have atmosphere’s all their own. You’ll often find yourself transported into a new world, biting your nails as you flip through the pages excited to find out what happens next.
- Clues
The most exciting mystery novels, in my opinion, are the ones that scatter clues throughout the story, which pull me in. I create my own theories and cannot wait to see if I’m correct. Was it the butler with the rope in the library? I can’t wait to find out!
